The NCD Summit: Preventing and Controlling Non-Communicable Diseases in an Ageing World

Program will present outcomes of the General Assembly (GA) High-level Meeting held in September on the Prevention and Control of Non-Communicable Diseases and the Interactive Civil Society Hearing that preceded it. Because 75% of global deaths from these diseases occur among those over 60, the World Health Organization recognizes global ageing as the primary driver of NCD predominance in these countries. …

Discussion on 3rd Open-ended Workgroup on Ageing, August 2012

Many similarities between 1st and 2nd open-ended workgroups:

  • Focused on issues and gaps in protection systems
  • Normative gaps in the Vienna and Madrid plans
  • NGOs went further to call for human rights convention for older persons
  • Currently there are multiple discrimination dimensions recognized but older persons not mentioned specifically -they refer instead to all human beings.

The NGO Committee on Ageing convened on Thursday, November 4th 2010 for their general meeting at the United Nations Church Center.  With UN representative Dr. Rosa Perla Resnick moderating, the focus was on “The Impact of Natural Disasters on Older Persons”. 

The United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) analyzed recent emergencies and the projects being undertaken in order to catalyze more effective and impartial response on the ground. …

The March 2010 program was presented during the annual meeting of the Commission on the Status of Women and was organized by Patty Day and Judy Lear, co-chairs of the Subcommittee on Older Women (SCOW) of the NGO Committee on the Status of Women, NY. Besides the NGO Committee on Ageing, NY, other co-sponsors included the NGO Committee on the Family, NY and several NGOs*.

1.  What are some of the most effective ways to implement the Mission of the NGO Committee on Ageing, New York (CoA, NY)?

  • Develop a one page “message” on current ageing issues that can be used, in conjunction with the mission, by committee members, as an
