Promote a Human Rights Convention for Older Persons

The Sub-Committee to Promote a Human Rights Convention for Older Persons has the responsibility to engage NGOs in consultative status with ECOSOC (and interested others) in supporting a convention, particularly in the context of the work of the Open-Ended Working Group on Ageing (OEWGA). The Sub-Committee monitors ageing issues at the United Nations, studying and understanding earlier convention strategies; prepares and delivers statements at relevant meetings; prepares advocacy material; visits Permanent Missions to urge their support; organizes like-minded NGOs in a common effort toward a multi-lateral legally binding instrument to protect the rights of older persons.  The Sub-Committee works closely with the Global Alliance on the Rights of  Older People (GAROP):

Open-ended Working Group on the Ageing,  Report on its 8th session

The General Assembly Open-ended Working Group on Ageing (OEWGA), which held its seventh session from 12-15 December 2017 to discuss the protection of the human rights of older persons, ended on an encouraging note !!  At all the previous six sessions, Member States held extensive discussions on a wide range of issues affecting older persons – discrimination, social security and social protection, right to health, violence and abuse, discrimination and access to work, age and social exclusion, access to justice, autonomy and demographic issues.
